Every movement begins with a mother who refused to let other mothers walk alone. This is hers.

Mawusi Christina Dogbey, MPH, PMPc
Founder & Executive Director
When Christina became a mother, she was met with appointments, checklists, and well-meaning advice — but rarely a soft place to land. No one asked how she was. Not really. And in the quiet moments between feedings and sleepless nights, a question began to take shape: what if motherhood could be met with as much joy and tenderness as it asks of us?
What began as informal gatherings in living rooms — circles of mothers sharing tea, tears, and truth — quickly became something larger. Mothers were hungry for spaces where their full humanity, especially as Black women, women of color, and mothers navigating systemic inequities, was centered and celebrated.
The Bloom Joy Lab grew from that hunger. A nonprofit rooted in the belief that wellness is a birthright, that creativity is healing, and that no mother should have to choose between thriving and surviving.
Today, Christina leads The Bloom Joy Lab from its home within the Maternal & Infant Health Innovation Center in Trenton, New Jersey — and dreams of villages of joy in every community that needs one. Her vision is simple and radical: that every mother's journey be met with healing, creativity, and community.
"I built the space I needed when I became a mother. The Joy Lab is my love letter to every mother still waiting to be asked how she is."
